U.S. House of Representatives passes bill to stop the trade of primates as “pets”

Washington, DC — Born Free USA united with Animal Protection Institute (Born Free USA) applauded today’s Congressional passage of the Captive Primate Safety Act (H.R. 2964). The bill, championed by Born Free USA and The Humane Society of the United States (The HSUS), prohibits interstate and international movement of nonhuman primates if they are to be kept as “pets.” The Act is sponsored by Representatives Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) and Mark Kirk (R-IL).

Orlando, FL — Born Free USA is offering to re-home Prada, a “pet” monkey who escaped from an apartment building in Orlando on Friday, at its Primate Sanctuary near San Antonio, Texas. The Born Free USA Primate Sanctuary is home to more than 500 macaques, baboons, and vervets, many of whom came from deplorable or inappropriate private homes or businesses. It is one of the very few in the U.S. that provide large, free-ranging, natural enclosures. The Sanctuary features 186 acres of dense vegetation with several ponds. The majority of monkeys live freely in these enclosures with minimum human interference.

National group and Sanctuary ask Governor to ban keeping nonhuman primates as pets

San Antonio, TX — Justin, a pet Japanese macaque who attacked a Mississippi IRS agent, has safely arrived at the Animal Protection Institute (API) Primate Sanctuary in Texas through a joint effort between API and the Mississippi Animal Rescue League in Jackson. The owner of the monkey was given a citation for keeping a captive wild animal without a license. In Mississippi, keepers of inherently dangerous wild animals, such as macaques, must obtain a state license.

National group calls for state legislation banning primates as pets

Springfield, IL — A pet monkey who last week attacked a Chicago girl has safely arrived at the Animal Protection Institute (API) Primate Sanctuary in Texas. The monkey, a rhesus macaque, apparently escaped from his cage and bit a 14-year-old girl severely enough that she was admitted to the hospital.
