About The Sanctuary

The Primate Sanctuary is a division of Born Free USA united with Animal Protection Institute. Our mission is to provide nonhuman primates as high a quality of life as we can, with as little human interference as possible. The 186-acre Sanctuary, located near San Antonio, Texas, is currently home to more than 500 individuals, many of whom were rescued from abusive or exploitative situations.

Cooling down in the sun

BaboonYet another good delivery of fresh produce this week — lots of soft fruit such as peaches, mangos, nectarines, grapes, and pluots. It’s a real treat to feed the baboons the day after our delivery. They are always keen to see what is new on the menu and get very excited vocalizing to each other if they see a particularly favored item.

Monkey killing sparks new calls for legislation banning the keeping of nonhuman primates as pets in Michigan

Detroit, MI — Following the needless killing of a pet monkey named Mikey by Wayne County officials over the weekend, Born Free USA united with Animal Protection Institute (Born Free USA), a national animal advocacy organization, is calling upon Michigan legislators to ban the keeping of nonhuman primates as pets in Michigan. Mikey was killed after he bit a young girl while being walked in public on a leash.
